Education Inequality
University studnet's basic needs insecurity
basic needs mean that wether there's sufficient food and securing the house
There's a loooot of topics to talk about in education inequality and unfairness, I would like to talk about the poverty in univerty students.
How I became interested in this issue
Basic needs insecurity problem has been long before the COVID-19
"Access ain't inclusion" mentioned the first-generation student who had to secure their food and house by
The pandemic exacerbated and visualized the issue
Especially in Japan, the lower-income students mostly make their living by student loan and part-time jobs, but because of pandemic, a lot students are losing their jobs, and they're suffering from
I'm also from lower-income house-hold, and first-gen university student.
Fortunately, I had enough literacy to utilize the financial support from university, and programming skill to get a high wage part-time jobs, but
I know some students who had to work really long time or work at nightclub.
I emphasize the students who are suffering from poverty,
Background
Basic needs insecurity in US
College in America, what do you imagine the day in a life as a college student in America
all nighters, keg stands, ethinically diverse welcome brochures,
The USA defines food security as having access to nutriously adequate, safe, and acceeptable food
Food security means access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life.
Think about the college student, a lot of times the students are first time away from home, they might not know the best decision with money, they might not know the problems are there: like very high cost of tuition, books, computer, and rent, stress comes from classes, and stress from not getting enough amount of food and anxiaety of shortage of money for rent
They have to deal with those barriers that the food secured students don't have to worry.
This college student food and housing insecurity leads to low college complete rate in students from financially disadvantaged students
At the same time, according to Survey of Consumer Finances in 2019 by the central bank of the United States
college graduates earn 80% more than those with just with high school diploma
College is more expensive and more important than ever before. An that dichootomy is putting students in a diffucult situation especially those who from lower-income family.
Do they risk food and housing insecurity and crippling debt for the hope that their investment turns into a career and finantial stability
Higher education is one of the only routes to upward mobility for those wnting to break the cycle of poverty

root cause
they argue that the root cause of the issue are
Rising tuition costs
n. According to the U.S. Department of
Education, “Between 2005–06 and 2015–16, prices for undergraduate tuition, fees, room, and
board at public institutions rose 34 percent, and prices at private nonprofit institutions rose 26
percent, after adjustment for inflation.”
College meal plans are expensive
College meal plan doesn't provide alwayas available
Financial aid may fall short:,students may simply run out of money before that year ends
Rising tuition costs
Tuition has been growing fast at america's both public university and private non-profit university

for-profit college
according to NACAC, for-profit colleges typically cost 20% more than their non-profit counterparts.
For-profit colleges have investors that they must answer to, and these investors expect to make a profit.
Many of the biggest for-profit college companies — like Phoenix University and Kaplan — are available to students living anywhere.
you should be warned that while you can gain practical skills and knowledge, some employers may hold for-profit credentials in lower regard.
non-profit college
Ivy League schools may be expensive, but they are non-profit institutions. All eight Ivy League schools are private non-profit schools. Each of these highly-regarded institutions fits the most important qualifications of a non-profit institution. The majority of money earned through the operation of each Ivy League school is re-invested into the school for state-of-the-art equipment, infrastructural maintenance, courtship of top educators, meaningful research, student activities, and the countless other experiences that make college so enriching.
public university
A public school is a college or university primarily funded by a state government. Public colleges and universities generally are larger than private schools and have larger class sizes.
